In ancient Hawaii a good canoe paddle was handed down from one generation to the next, and prized as a family heirloom. The Hawaiians did not have very elaborate and fancy ceremonial paddles.  Just by choosing the exotic highly figured wood from the Koa Tree each paddle was a piece of art in itself .  And this is still the case today.
